Pilates training in a fully equipped studio is the authentic approach to learning the method, which allows one to fully utilize traditional studio apparatus based on those used by Joseph Pilates in his studio. This usually includes the Reformer, Cadillac (or Table), Tower (or Wall Unit), High Chair, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel and Small Barrels, Pedi-Pole, as well as various smaller apparatuses and props. There are hundreds of exercises and variations on the equipment, ensuring a complete Pilates experience and total body workout.
Private Sessions
I recommend starting with private, one-on-one sessions to build a solid foundation from which to progress. You will learn the basics, become comfortable with the apparatuses, and identify your individual needs. Once this is achieved, clients can either choose to stay in a private session (often a good choice for those with special needs or significant injuries), or move on to semi-private sessions.
Semi-Private Sessions
Semi-private sessions are a great way to focus on rhythm and flow, and can be a fun and challenging workout for those with a strong foundation in the Pilates method. While it may seem there is less focus on an individual’s specific needs, many clients find they learn from each other, work harder, and prefer the energy and dynamic of semi-private sessions. Additionally, semi-private sessions are more cost effective than private sessions.
An ideal way to round out your Pilates practice and to see and experience true results is to take one private session, one semi-private, and (at least) one mat class weekly. As Joseph Pilates states in his book,
“If you will faithfully perform your Contrology exercises regularly only four times a week for just three months as outlined in RETURN TO LIFE, you will find your body development approaching the ideal, accompanied by renewed mental vigor and spiritual enhancement.”
However you choose to practice Pilates, your studio sessions will utilize all of the classical apparatuses, including mat exercises, ensuring a complete and satisfying total body workout.
